About Roper Microwave Repair
Roper has never been a big name in microwaves, and you will not find many Roper-badged units in local kitchens. When one does turn up, it is a Whirlpool-sourced countertop or over-the-range model with the same basic layout as other budget microwaves: a magnetron, a high-voltage transformer, capacitor and diode, a set of door interlock switches, a turntable motor and, on over-the-range units, a vent fan and light. Many Roper kitchens actually have a microwave from a different brand, and we repair those too.
Most microwave failures fall into a short list. No heat with everything else working points to the magnetron, diode, capacitor or transformer. A unit that is suddenly completely dead often has a blown line fuse, and that fuse frequently blows because a door switch failed. Arcing or sparks inside the cavity usually come from a damaged waveguide cover or chipped interior paint. Over-the-range units add vent fan motors that grind or stop and light sockets that fail.
From the outside, you can test the outlet with another device, heat a cup of water for one minute to check performance, and inspect the waveguide cover on the cavity wall for burned spots. Keep the grease filters clean on over-the-range units. Do not remove the outer cabinet. The high-voltage capacitor can hold enough charge to cause serious injury even after the microwave has been unplugged.
We discharge and test the high-voltage section properly, check the door switches and interlock alignment, and inspect the fan, light and mounting. Because new microwaves are inexpensive, we will tell you up front if the repair is close to the cost of a replacement before you authorize anything.
Door switches, fuses, waveguide covers and fans are sensible repairs. High-voltage component failures on a basic countertop unit are often not worth repairing, and we would rather say so than sell you a part you do not need.
Where Roper Microwaves Tend to Fail
- Door interlock switch failure blowing the internal line fuse
- Magnetron, diode or capacitor failure leaving food cold
- Burned waveguide cover causing sparks inside the cavity
- Over-the-range vent fan motor grinding or stopping
