About Frigidaire Microwave Repair
Frigidaire microwaves are mostly over-the-range models, with some countertop and built-in units. Over-the-range models combine the microwave with an exhaust fan and cooktop light, while Gallery models may add convection or air fry features. Inside, they share the same core: a magnetron, high-voltage transformer, capacitor and diode, door interlock switches, a turntable motor and an electronic control. Air-fry and convection models add a heating element and fan behind the cavity, which can fail on their own while microwave heating still works.
The most common problems are door switches that wear out and stop the microwave from starting, and high-voltage faults that let the microwave run without heating. Turntable motors fail, leaving food unevenly heated. Over-the-range vent fan motors wear out and become noisy, and the fan thermostat can fail and leave the fan running. Keypads can stop responding, often from steam or grease.
Check that the door closes firmly and the latch is intact. Reset the microwave at the breaker for a minute after a power outage. Clean the grease filters under an over-the-range unit regularly. Never open the cabinet yourself; the high-voltage capacitor can hold a dangerous charge even when unplugged. If you see sparking inside, stop using it and check for metal or damaged interior paint.
During diagnosis, we safely discharge the high-voltage circuit and test the magnetron, diode, capacitor, transformer and door switches. We check the turntable motor, control board and keypad, and for over-the-range units, the vent fan and thermostat. Over-the-range models may need to be removed from the wall for some repairs.
Door switches, turntable motors and fans are inexpensive repairs. A failed magnetron or control board on a basic over-the-range Frigidaire may cost a large share of a new unit, and we will give you an honest recommendation. If the microwave is still inside its first year, we will suggest checking Frigidaire's warranty coverage first.
Where Frigidaire Microwaves Tend to Fail
- Door interlock switches failing, preventing the microwave from starting
- High-voltage diode or magnetron failure leaving food cold
- Turntable motor stalling and heating food unevenly
- Over-the-range vent fan motor noisy or running constantly
