About Admiral Microwave Repair
Admiral microwaves are mostly countertop models, with a smaller number of over-the-range units that include a vent fan and cooktop light. They are basic machines with mechanical or simple touch controls, a turntable, a magnetron that produces the microwave energy, and a high-voltage transformer, diode and capacitor that power it. Door interlock switches shut everything off when the door opens. Most are older and were sold as budget units.
Food that comes out as cold as it went in, while the light, fan and turntable all seem normal, is the classic Admiral microwave call. Behind it is usually a worn-out magnetron, a shorted high-voltage diode or a failed capacitor. A unit that is completely dead often has a blown internal fuse, which commonly happens when a door switch fails or the door is slammed. Sparking inside the cavity can come from a burned waveguide cover or chipped interior paint. Turntable motors and simple controls also fail with age, and on over-the-range units the vent fan and lights wear out.
A microwave can store a dangerous charge even when unplugged, so owners should not open the cabinet. You can safely check that the outlet has power, test heating with a cup of water on high for a minute, make sure the door closes and latches squarely, and look at the waveguide cover inside the cavity for burns. If you see sparks or smell burning, stop using it.
Our technician safely discharges the capacitor, tests the fuse, door interlocks, magnetron, diode and transformer, and checks the control. We tell you what failed and what the repair costs, alongside a frank comparison with a new microwave.
This is one appliance where we often recommend replacement. A countertop Admiral with a failed magnetron usually costs nearly as much to repair as a new microwave. A blown fuse or door switch is an inexpensive fix and worth doing. Over-the-range units take more labor to replace, so repair can make more sense there.
Where Admiral Microwaves Tend to Fail
- Magnetron, diode or capacitor failure leaving the microwave unable to heat
- Internal fuse blown after a door switch failure or slam
- Door interlock switch wear stopping the unit from starting
- Burned waveguide cover causing sparks inside the cavity
