About Viking Microwave Repair
Viking's microwaves are mostly built-in designs meant to match pro-style kitchens. The most popular is the microwave drawer, installed under a counter or wall oven and opened with a touch so the drawer glides out on its own. Viking has also sold built-in and trim-kit convection microwaves that sit in a wall of ovens or a cabinet. Both styles use the same core heating parts as any microwave, but the drawer models add a motor, gears, rails and position switches.
On microwave drawers, mechanical problems are common. Drawers stop opening or closing, travel partway and stall, or make grinding noises, usually because of a worn motor or gear, debris in the rails, or a switch that no longer senses the drawer position. Heating failures, on drawers and built-ins alike, trace to the magnetron, high-voltage diode, capacitor or a door interlock switch. Touch controls can stop responding after storms or from moisture, and convection models can lose their heating element or fan.
A microwave can hold a dangerous charge even when unplugged, so do not open the cabinet. You can confirm the breaker is on, clean crumbs and spills from the drawer rails with the power off, and check that nothing is blocking the drawer path. Test heating with a cup of water. If a drawer has stalled, don't force it by hand, since that can strip the gears.
Our technician safely discharges the capacitor, tests the high-voltage components and interlocks, checks the drawer motor, gears, rails and switches, and tests convection parts where fitted. We also check that the unit is level and secure in its opening. You get the diagnosis and the price before any work.
Microwave drawers and built-in units fit specific openings, so repairing a drawer mechanism, interlock or magnetron is usually better than hunting for a replacement that matches your cabinetry.
Where Viking Microwaves Tend to Fail
- Drawer motor or gear wear preventing the drawer from opening
- Debris in drawer rails causing the drawer to stall partway
- Magnetron or high-voltage diode failure stopping heating
- Touch control unresponsive after moisture or a power surge
