About Admiral Dryer Repair

Admiral dryers are simple machines, built on Whirlpool or Maytag platforms depending on age, with a rotary timer, a few cycle buttons and a lint screen in the door opening or on top. Electric models use a heating element in a housing; gas models use a glow-bar igniter and a gas valve with solenoid coils. Both have thermal fuses and thermostats that shut off heat if the dryer overheats.

The most common complaint is a dryer that runs but doesn't heat. On electric models, the thermal fuse, heating element or high-limit thermostat is the usual cause. On gas models, the igniter or valve coils are common culprits. A blown thermal fuse almost always means the vent is restricted, so the fuse will blow again if the vent isn't cleared. Noise is the next most common issue: drum rollers, idler pulleys and drum glides wear and cause thumping, squealing or scraping. Broken belts stop the drum while the motor hums.

Owners can help a lot with airflow. Unplug the dryer before inspecting. Clean the lint screen and the housing it sits in. Pull the dryer out and disconnect the vent, then check the duct and the outside hood for lint, nests or crushed sections. Vents on older homes are often long or run through crawl spaces, and spring pollen can collect at the outside flap.

Our technician tests the thermal fuse, thermostats, element or igniter and valve coils, inspects rollers, pulley, belt and glides, and checks exhaust airflow. We match parts to the platform. If you smell gas around a gas dryer, leave the house and call the gas utility. We explain the diagnosis and the price before any repair.

Admiral dryer parts are generally inexpensive and widely available as Whirlpool or Maytag equivalents, which makes repair a good value on most dryers that aren't rusted or damaged.

Where Admiral Dryers Tend to Fail

  • Thermal fuse blown by a restricted vent, leaving no heat
  • Gas igniter or valve coils failing on gas dryers
  • Drum rollers and idler pulley wearing and causing thumping
  • Broken drive belt stopping the drum while the motor runs
