About Whirlpool Dryer Repair
The Whirlpool dryer is one of the most widely shared platforms in home appliances, with the same basic layout appearing under several sister brands. A belt wraps the drum and runs over an idler pulley to a motor that also drives the blower. The drum rides on rear rollers and a front support. Electric units use a heating element in a housing at the back, while gas models use an igniter, flame sensor and gas valve coils. Safety devices include a thermal fuse, a high-limit thermostat and a thermal cut-off on many electric models.
The most common Whirlpool dryer call is no heat. A thermal fuse or thermal cut-off may have opened because of overheating, often from a clogged vent, or the heating element may have failed. On gas units, the igniter can weaken or crack, or the valve coils can fail, causing a dryer that heats briefly then goes cold. Noise problems come from worn rollers, the idler pulley or the belt. A dryer that will not start at all may have a failed door switch, start switch or thermal fuse, since on many models the fuse also cuts power to the motor.
Owners should unplug the dryer and clean the lint screen and the lint trap housing. Check the vent duct behind the dryer for kinks or crushing, and confirm the exterior vent hood opens with strong airflow. For electric dryers, check both legs of the breaker. For gas dryers, make sure the gas valve is open. If you smell gas, leave the house and call the gas company from outside.
We test the thermal fuse, thermal cut-off, high-limit and cycling thermostats, element or igniter and coils. We check vent airflow because fixing the fuse without fixing the vent sets up another failure. For noise, we inspect rollers, idler and belt as a set.
Whirlpool dryers are mechanically simple and almost always worth repairing. Even an older unit with a no-heat or noise issue is usually a sensible repair.
Where Whirlpool Dryers Tend to Fail
- Thermal fuse or thermal cut-off opened by restricted exhaust airflow
- Heating element burned open on electric models, tumbling cold
- Gas valve coils or igniter failing, heat cuts out mid-cycle
- Drum rollers, idler pulley or belt worn, thumping and squealing
