About Traulsen Freezer Repair
Traulsen reach-in and roll-in freezers use the same overhead layout as the brand's refrigerators, with a top-mounted condensing unit and an evaporator inside the cabinet, plus a defrost system that keeps the coil clear of frost. On a schedule set by the control, the compressor pauses, a heater warms the evaporator, water drains through a heated line, and a termination device ends the cycle when the coil has cleared.
Defrost problems are the main freezer-specific failure. An open heater lets frost build into solid ice, cutting airflow until the cabinet warms. A failed termination device can stop defrost early or let the heater run too long. A drain heater that stops working lets meltwater freeze in the line, which then backs up and freezes in the cabinet. Door gaskets that stiffen and crack in the cold let humid air in, and that moisture accelerates frost buildup.
As an owner, you can turn the unit off and check for a few warning signs. Look for ice building on the evaporator cover, on the cabinet floor or around the drain. Check that doors close firmly and that gaskets are not split. Make sure nothing is stored on top of the cabinet blocking the condenser. If the coil is iced solid, move product out and let it defrost naturally rather than chipping at it.
Our visit focuses on proving each part of the defrost cycle: heater resistance, termination function, drain heater operation and whether the control is initiating defrost on time. We also check the condensing unit overhead, since high head pressure in a hot kitchen keeps a freezer from recovering after each defrost.
Defrost and gasket repairs are low-cost compared with the value of a Traulsen freezer, so they are almost always worth doing. Sealed-system faults are bigger jobs, but on a sound cabinet they often still make sense.
Where Traulsen Freezers Tend to Fail
- Open defrost heater allowing solid ice across the evaporator
- Termination device ending defrost early or overheating the coil
- Drain line heater failure backing frozen water into the cabinet
- Cold-stiffened gaskets cracking and admitting humid kitchen air
