La Cornue is a French maker of hand-built ranges that traces its history to 1908 and is famous for its vaulted oven design. Its Château ranges are configured to order with custom colors, trim and cooktop layouts, while the CornuFé line offers the same look in standard configurations. We diagnose a La Cornue by first matching the exact configuration, since each range is built to order and parts are tied to the specific unit rather than a general model. Parts come through a bespoke factory channel with long lead times, so we explain the timing and any interim options before you approve a repair.

A French range built one at a time
La Cornue started in 1908 outside Paris, when Albert Dupuy designed a gas oven with a vaulted ceiling. The curved roof helps hot air circulate naturally around the food, an idea that still defines the brand. Its Château ranges are assembled by hand and configured to order, with the buyer choosing width, oven types, cooktop layout, enamel color and trim in brass, nickel, chrome or copper.
The CornuFé line brings the La Cornue look to a more standardized set of configurations at a lower price. In the Charlotte area, both appear mainly in custom kitchens in larger homes in Myers Park, Eastover, SouthPark and around Lake Norman, often as the centerpiece of a remodel.
How the vaulted oven and cooktop options work
La Cornue ovens come in gas and electric versions, and some ranges combine both. The gas ovens rely on the vaulted shape to move heat without a fan, while electric ovens may add convection. Cooktops can include standard gas burners, high-output burners, a French top with a solid cast-iron plate that is hottest at the center, a plancha, an induction section or a simmer plate.
Because every range can be different, diagnosis starts with the build. We confirm which ovens and cooktop modules your range has, how each one is controlled, and what safety devices it uses. Many configurations use thermocouple flame-safety devices on the burners, so a burner that must be held in to stay lit has a flame sensor that we test specifically.
The faults we see on La Cornue ranges
Burner and thermostat assemblies are the most common source of trouble. Thermocouples weaken over time, so a burner lights but goes out when the knob is released. Spark igniters and their switches wear, and grease or moisture can stop the spark. Oven thermostats drift, so the oven runs hotter or cooler than its setting. French tops and planchas can heat unevenly if their burner or thermostat is not working properly.
Finish and trim components also need attention. Brass and copper trim tarnishes and needs polishing, knobs can loosen or crack, and the enamel can chip if heavy pans are dropped. In humid Charlotte summers, these finishes can tarnish faster, and condensation inside the oven after cooking should be dried to protect the interior.
Bespoke parts and long lead times
La Cornue parts are matched to the specific range rather than to a model line, and they usually come through the factory channel in France. Lead times can be long, sometimes several weeks or more. Before you approve a repair, we tell you what part is needed, how it will be sourced and how long it may take, and whether any part of the range can be used safely in the meantime.
If your range is still under manufacturer warranty, we will tell you first, since that route may be better. When we complete a repair, our work carries a 90-day parts and 30-day labor warranty. We handle the finish and trim of the range carefully during service, using protective covers and avoiding abrasive tools.
Repairing a range built to last generations
La Cornue ranges are designed to last for decades, and replacing one is a major expense and a long wait. Repair is almost always the right choice, including thermocouples, igniters, thermostats, valves and controls. The main question is timing, since some parts take a long time to arrive.
If you smell gas at any point, leave the home and call the gas utility or 911 from outside before calling us. For gas burners that will not stay lit, do not try to bypass the flame-safety device. We will test and replace the part so the range is safe to use.
