The classic top-loader uses an agitator, a belt-driven transmission and mechanical dial controls; other top-load models add electronic controls. Front-loaders use stainless drums, heavy bearings and steel cabinets. All of them are designed to be opened up and repaired rather than replaced when one part wears.

Top-Loaders That Fill but Won't Spin

Older top-load washers are everywhere on this side of town, and their most familiar complaint is a machine that fills and agitates but leaves the clothes soaking. Depending on the design, a worn lid switch, a broken drive coupler or a slipping belt is usually responsible. A washer that hums without moving may have a jammed pump or a failing motor part instead. Stacked units in apartments along the Tyvola and Billy Graham Parkway corridor have less room to work in, and a drain hose pushed too far into the standpipe can siphon water out mid-fill, which looks like a fill fault.

Unplug the washer, then check that the lid strike on a top-loader is intact and the drain hose is not kinked or crushed behind the machine. Do not run it again if water is on the floor.
