Why is only one of my JennAir column units warm?

Column refrigerators and freezers are separate appliances with their own sealed systems and controls. A fault in one does not affect the other, so the warm cabinet needs its own diagnosis. Fans, sensors and condenser airflow are the first things we check.

Can you check a Lake Wylie refrigerator while we're away for the week?

JennAir Refrigerators: What We Check First

Most JennAir refrigerators we open in Charlotte are built-ins or column units, and they behave differently from a standard freestanding fridge. On many built-in models the compressor and condenser live at the top of the cabinet behind a grille, with the evaporator and fans down in the fresh food and freezer sections. Column units split refrigeration into separate cabinets, each with its own sealed system and electronics, so one side can fail while the other runs perfectly.

Lake humidity and homes that sit empty

Air off the coves of Lake Wylie stays damp through much of the year, and refrigerator door gaskets show it first. Moisture beads along the door edges, mildew starts in the folds of the seal, and a gasket that has stiffened lets warm, wet air in. Wipe the gaskets with warm soapy water, dry them and check that the doors close on their own from a partly open position.

Part-time lake houses add a different risk. A refrigerator left running but rarely opened can develop a slow cooling problem that nobody notices until the weekend it is packed full. If the unit feels warmer than usual on arrival, check the temperature with a thermometer before loading it.
