The electronics add moisture sensors on the drum baffles or front panel, an exhaust thermistor and, on many models, a vent-restriction alert. What fails is usually mechanical or thermal, but the controls decide how the symptom looks.

Long vent runs from second-floor laundry rooms

Builders often place the laundry room in the middle of the second floor, so the vent has to travel through a ceiling or wall to a roof cap or a distant exterior wall. Every extra foot and elbow slows airflow, lint settles, and the dryer starts tripping its thermal fuse or taking an hour and a half per load. In spring, pollen collects in roof and wall caps and adds to the buildup.

A simple test helps before you call. With the dryer running on heat, go outside and feel for strong, warm airflow at the vent hood; a weak puff means a restriction somewhere along the line. Wash the lint screen with a little dish soap if dryer sheets have left it coated, since a film you cannot see can block air.

Electric, gas and what the technician tests

Many homes here run electric dryers, while those with natural gas service may have a gas model. Either way, the technician checks the heating circuit or igniter, the thermal fuse and thermostats, the moisture sensor bars and the blower, then measures airflow at the machine.
