Wet Nugget ice can come from low refrigeration performance, a dirty condenser, heavy scale in the cylinder or an overfilled water reservoir. Warm surroundings can also play a part. We check each to find the cause.

Why does my Fort Mill refrigerator make ice but the dispenser won't drop it?

Cubes can fuse into a clump in the bin, especially after a power blip or a stretch of low use, and jam the auger. Empty the bin, break up the clump and let it thaw if needed. If the dispenser still does not move, the auger motor or door switch may be at fault, and we can test both.

Scotsman Ice Makers: What We Check First

Scotsman ice machines we see in the Charlotte area fall into three groups, and each is built differently. Prodigy cube machines freeze water on an evaporator and use hot gas to harvest. Nugget and flake machines freeze water inside a refrigerated cylinder, with a gear-driven auger pushing ice up and out through a head. Gourmet undercounter cubers spray water upward into cups to form clear, top-hat-shaped cubes. The first thing we do is identify which one you have.

When the refrigerator stops making ice

In-door ice systems in newer refrigerators use a small ice maker in the freezer or in the fresh-food door, with its own fan and heater. A frozen fill tube, a clogged water filter or a failing inlet valve stops production more often than the ice maker module itself. If the filter is past its change date, replace it first and give the machine a day to recover.

Low water pressure shows up as small or hollow cubes. In a newer house, the supply line behind the refrigerator may have been kinked when the unit was pushed into its opening. Pull the refrigerator out carefully, check the line for kinks and make sure the shutoff valve is fully open.

Undercounter machines and outdoor kitchens

Standalone ice machines at a wet bar or outdoor kitchen need periodic cleaning, and those installed outside deal with humidity, pollen and summer heat on the condenser.
