About Sub-Zero Ice Maker Repair
Sub-Zero ice comes from two very different machines. Most refrigerators and freezers have an automatic ice maker inside the freezer compartment, fed by a water valve and line. Separately, Sub-Zero sells undercounter ice makers that produce clear ice in a dedicated cabinet, often installed in a bar, butler's pantry or outdoor kitchen. Undercounter units need a water supply, a drain, and either gravity drainage or a drain pump.
In-freezer ice makers usually stop working because of water supply problems. A clogged water filter or low water pressure reduces fill, the fill line can freeze, or the water valve fails. The ice maker module itself can also stop cycling. Undercounter ice makers have their own failure patterns: mineral scale on the evaporator, clogged water distribution, a drain pump or drain line that clogs, bin sensors that misread, and condenser airflow restricted at the front grille. Sub-Zero recommends cleaning undercounter units on a schedule, and machines that miss those cleanings tend to slow down gradually before stopping.
Owners can check several things safely. Replace the water filter if it is overdue, and make sure the supply valve is open. For in-freezer ice makers, confirm the ice maker is switched on and the freezer is cold enough. For undercounter units, clean the front grille, follow the manual's cleaning procedure for scale, and confirm the drain isn't backed up. Homes on private wells may need more frequent cleaning because of sediment.
Our technician tests water pressure, the valve, the fill line heater and the ice maker module for in-freezer systems. For undercounter units we check the evaporator, water distribution, pump, drain, sensors and condenser. You hear the diagnosis and price before any work.
Ice maker repairs are usually straightforward and worth doing. Undercounter units are more involved, but replacing one means matching an existing cutout, so repair is still usually the better choice. Whatever we replace is backed by our 90-day parts and 30-day labor warranty.
Where Sub-Zero Ice Makers Tend to Fail
