Tight kitchens and trapped heat

In the older mill-era houses around town, the refrigerator often sits in a narrow alcove or between cabinets that were never meant for a modern full-size unit. With no space at the back or top, warm air from the condenser has nowhere to go, so the compressor runs long and the fresh-food side drifts warm. A floor that has settled over a crawl space can also tilt the refrigerator so its doors fail to swing shut.

Pull the refrigerator out a few inches, vacuum the coils at the bottom or back, and check that the doors close on their own from halfway open. Water on the floor usually means a clogged defrost drain or a dripping supply line, and both are worth catching before the subfloor gets wet.
