Cabarrus County is not one kind of place. Central Concord has older houses on established streets, many with kitchens that were remodeled into the original footprint, which can leave a dishwasher or refrigerator wedged into a tight opening. Spreading out from there, and especially around Harrisburg and the western side of Concord near Concord Mills, are large subdivisions built in the last few decades, often two stories with the laundry room upstairs.

Kannapolis grew around the Cannon Mills textile operation, and its mill-village houses are small, close together and frequently on crawl spaces, with laundry hookups added wherever they would fit. East of Concord the county opens into farmland and small towns, where homes sit on larger lots and many draw water from private wells. Those differences shape what fails and how we approach the repair.

Upstairs laundry rooms in the newer subdivisions raise the stakes on a washer leak.
