Cooktop Repair for Gas, Radiant, Coil and Induction Units

A built-in cooktop is tied to your counter, so replacing it means matching a fixed cutout. ProFix Appliance Repair Charlotte diagnoses the actual failed part first, so the cooktop you already have can usually keep working.

Houses, Apartments & Condos Across the Charlotte Area

A cooktop is the built-in cooking surface set into your counter, heating pans with gas flame, radiant or coil elements, or induction coils. Because it's fitted into a fixed cutout and used every day, a dead zone or ignition fault disrupts meals and replacing it is rarely as simple as swapping a box. We repair gas cooktops with sealed burners and spark ignition, radiant glass smooth-tops, coil-element tops and induction cooktops, including models with flex zones, griddles and built-in downdraft ventilation. Work covers burners, igniters, valves, switches, elements, glass tops, sensors and control boards.

Four Cooktop Designs, Four Different Weak Points

A cooktop looks like a simple slab, but the technology under the surface decides what goes wrong. Gas units meter fuel through a valve at each knob and light it with a spark electrode fed by a shared module. Coil tops send line voltage through an infinite switch to a removable element. Radiant glass tops hide ribbon elements under ceramic glass, each guarded by a limiter. Induction cooktops use copper coils and power electronics to heat the pan itself through a magnetic field.

Each design wears in its own way. On gas, spark electrodes and modules take the abuse from boil-overs. On coil and radiant tops, switches and terminals slowly cook from repeated heat cycles, and radiant elements eventually crack or burn out. On induction, the coils rarely fail; it's the boards and cooling fans that age, and they depend on airflow from the cabinet below.

Reading the Symptom Before Blaming a Part

One dead zone with the rest working almost always points to that position's element, switch, burner or igniter, not to the main control. When every gas burner stops lighting at once, look first at shared items: power to the spark module, the gas shutoff, or the regulator. A zone that only works at full power is a switch or relay stuck closed, and one that glows after it's switched off is the same fault in a more dangerous form.

Induction complaints deserve extra care, because many of them aren't failures. A flashing zone that won't start, buzzing at high power, or a zone that keeps cutting out can come from pans that aren't magnetic, are too small for the zone, or a cooktop that's overheating because storage has been packed against the vents underneath. We rule those out before quoting a board, which saves owners from paying for electronics they didn't need.

Checks That Are Safe to Do Yourself

On a gas cooktop, with every knob off and the surface cool, lift the burner caps, clear the ports with a straight pin, dry the electrodes and reseat the caps flat in their notches. Most single-burner ignition complaints end there. On a coil top, switch off the breaker and swap a cold coil into a working socket to see whether the coil or the socket is to blame. On induction, a fridge magnet held to the pan base tells you whether the pan will work.

Some problems are not owner jobs. A gas smell means leaving the home and calling the gas utility from outside, not hunting for the leak. A cracked glass top should be switched off at the breaker and left alone, since liquids can reach live parts below. Never bypass a limiter, open a gas valve or work inside the junction box.

What Happens When a Technician Comes Out

You can call us or book online, and same-day appointments are often possible when the schedule allows. The technician identifies the model, confirms what you're seeing, and tests the circuit or gas path involved rather than guessing from the symptom. Before any work starts, you hear what failed and what the repair will cost.

If the part isn't on hand, we tell you at the visit, order it, and come back to install it. Glass tops and induction boards often need to be ordered for the exact model. Every repair carries a 90-day parts and 30-day labor warranty, and if the cooktop is still within its manufacturer's coverage, we'll point that out so you can decide whether to use it.

Repair or Replace When the Counter Cutout Is Fixed

Cooktops are more often worth repairing than freestanding appliances because a new one has to fit the opening already cut into stone or laminate. Cutout sizes differ across brands and generations, so a replacement can mean trimming the counter, filler strips, or a new countertop. That makes a switch, igniter, element or even a glass top a reasonable repair on a cooktop that's otherwise sound.

Replacement makes more sense when an older induction unit needs both a power board and a control board, when a discontinued glass top can't be sourced, or when a gas cooktop has corroded valves and burners throughout. We'll lay out the trade-off plainly, including whether a model with the same cutout size is likely to be available.

Habits That Keep a Cooktop Working Longer

Keep the cabinet below the cooktop clear. Radiant and induction units shed heat downward, and stacked pans or baskets pressed against the vents make electronics run hot through Charlotte's long summers, when kitchens are already warm. Lift cookware instead of sliding it across glass, and use pans with flat bases.

On gas, clean caps and ports properly instead of wiping around them, and let parts dry fully before relighting; a damp electrode is the most common reason a burner clicks without lighting. Wipe sugary spills from glass once it's safe to do so, since sugar can pit the surface. After a thunderstorm outage, a cooktop that behaves oddly may simply need a breaker reset before you assume the controls have failed.
