KitchenAid Freezers: What We Check First
KitchenAid sells very few standalone freezers, so nearly all the KitchenAid freezer work we do involves the freezer section of a refrigerator. That means the pull-out drawer on French-door and bottom-mount models, the full-height freezer side of side-by-sides, and the freezer compartment on built-in units. All of these are frost-free, using a defrost heater, a sensor and a fan to keep the evaporator clear.
- Defrost heater or sensor failure letting frost choke the evaporator
- Evaporator fan noisy or stopped, warming the freezer
- Drawer slides or gasket worn, letting humid air inside
- Freezer ice maker leaking water that freezes in the bin
The full explanation, including what you can safely check yourself and when repair beats replacement, is in our KitchenAid freezer repair guide.
Garage Freezers Through a Carolina Summer
An attached garage facing west can get far hotter than the house on summer afternoons, and many freezers are rated only for a moderate ambient range. The compressor runs longer, the condenser fan works harder, and a start relay or fan motor that was already marginal finally quits. Pollen and garage dust on the coils make every one of those problems worse.
Frost-free uprights add defrost parts to the list. If frost builds on the back wall and the shelves warm up, a defrost heater, thermostat or timer may have failed. Chest freezers rarely have automatic defrost, so they tend to fail at the thermostat, relay or compressor.
Protecting the Food and Booking the Visit
Move food to a cooler first. Then check the outlet with a lamp, look for a tripped GFCI in the garage, and make sure the lid or door seals tightly. Garage outlets often sit on a GFCI that trips during storms and cuts power silently. We test the relay, fans, thermostat and defrost parts, explain the cause and price, and tell you honestly if an older freezer is better replaced.
