Garage Freezers Through a Carolina Summer

An attached garage facing west can get far hotter than the house on summer afternoons, and many freezers are rated only for a moderate ambient range. The compressor runs longer, the condenser fan works harder, and a start relay or fan motor that was already marginal finally quits. Frost-free uprights add defrost parts to the list. If frost builds on the back wall and the shelves warm up, a defrost heater, thermostat or timer may have failed. Chest freezers rarely have automatic defrost, so they tend to fail at the thermostat, relay or compressor.
