My Viking stove's oven igniter glows but the oven won't light. Why?

That is the classic sign of a weak glow-bar igniter. It glows but doesn't draw enough current to open the gas valve. Replacing the igniter usually fixes it, and we test the valve to be sure.

Are parts still available for the older gas stove in my Elizabeth cottage?

Viking Stoves: What We Check First

Most Viking stoves in local kitchens are freestanding all-gas pro ranges in 30, 36 or 48-inch widths, from the older Professional series and the newer 5 Series and 7 Series. On top are heavy sealed burners with spark ignition and cast grates. Below, the oven uses a gas bake burner lit by a hot-surface glow-bar igniter, and many models have a Gourmet-Glo infrared broiler at the top of the oven with its own igniter. Older stoves use a mechanical oven thermostat; newer ones use a sensor and electronic control.

Older Gas Stoves and Heavier Models

A freestanding gas stove in an Elizabeth or Chantilly cottage may be decades into its life, connected to a gas line extended during past renovations. Its most frequent issues are weak igniters, surface burners that will not light, and oven thermostats that drift. Parts for many older stoves are still available, but some models are discontinued, and the technician tells you which applies.

In Myers Park, a heavy freestanding stove may have six burners and a large oven. Its weight and gas connection make moving it a careful job, and the anti-tip bracket should always be in place. Storm outages under the old tree canopy can also affect electronic ignition on newer models.
