My Viking stove's oven igniter glows but the oven won't light. Why?

That is the classic sign of a weak glow-bar igniter. It glows but doesn't draw enough current to open the gas valve. Replacing the igniter usually fixes it, and we test the valve to be sure.

Is an older gas stove in a Pineville house worth repairing?

Viking Stoves: What We Check First

Most Viking stoves in local kitchens are freestanding all-gas pro ranges in 30, 36 or 48-inch widths, from the older Professional series and the newer 5 Series and 7 Series. On top are heavy sealed burners with spark ignition and cast grates. Below, the oven uses a gas bake burner lit by a hot-surface glow-bar igniter, and many models have a Gourmet-Glo infrared broiler at the top of the oven with its own igniter. Older stoves use a mechanical oven thermostat; newer ones use a sensor and electronic control.

Older Stoves in Houses Near the Town Center

Some of the houses around Pineville's historic main street have been through several kitchen updates, and the stove may be an older gas model on a connector that has been moved more than once, or an electric stove plugged into a receptacle installed long ago. These are dependable appliances, but age shows up in worn knobs, sticking valves, tired igniters and burner caps that no longer seat properly.

On electric stoves, a scorched or loose plug at the wall receptacle can cause heat that comes and goes, and it is worth catching early. On gas, a lazy yellow flame usually means dirty ports or a misaligned cap. Do not slide a gas stove out to look behind it yourself if the connector looks old or stiff.
