Garage and Porch Freezers in Summer Heat

South End's three-story townhomes often put a ground-floor garage under the living space, and it is a natural home for a second freezer. Dilworth houses, with few basements and limited storage, tend to keep a chest or upright freezer on an enclosed porch or in a detached shed. Many freezers are rated for a limited ambient temperature range, and a hot, humid afternoon in an unconditioned space pushes them past it: the compressor runs nonstop, frost builds quickly and food may soften.

Keep a few inches of space around the unit, brush dust from the coils with the freezer unplugged, and check the lid or door gasket for gaps. If the freezer is frost-free and the back panel is caked with ice, the defrost system may have failed.
