The most common cause is overheating protection, often because the cooling air path under the counter is blocked by a drawer, insulation or stored items. Unsuitable or warped cookware can also trigger it. If clearing the vent and changing pans does not help, a fan, sensor or power board may be failing.

Gas rangetops and drop-in gas cooktops use the same burner family as the ranges: sealed burners, spark electrodes and thermocouple flame-safety valves under cast-iron grates. Induction cooktops have no flame at all, using copper coils under a glass surface, power electronics and a cooling fan, with touch or knob-style controls.
