Does my Roper dishwasher have a filter I need to clean?

Newer Roper dishwashers built on Whirlpool's current platform usually have a removable filter under the bottom spray arm. It should be twisted out and rinsed every month or so. Older units often use a self-cleaning disposer instead and do not have a removable filter.

A roommate used dish soap in our dishwasher and it flooded. Is it damaged?

Usually not. Remove the foam, run a rinse cycle with no detergent and dry the floor. If the dishwasher still leaks or shows an error after the suds are gone, report it to your landlord, since water may have reached the control or a seal.

Both types rely on a float switch, an inlet valve, a heating element and a door latch.

Suds, Food Debris and Older Connections

Dishwashers in rented houses near campus fail in recognizable ways. Someone runs a load with hand dish soap and the kitchen floor fills with foam. Plates go in unscraped, the filter clogs and the pump starts to whine. A door gets slammed or leaned on, and the latch or the hinge cables give out.
