Is it worth repairing a Smeg countertop microwave?

Usually not with an in-home visit. A countertop microwave costs relatively little to replace, and the diagnosis alone can be a large part of its value. We are glad to advise, but our repair work makes more sense on built-in Smeg combination ovens that are fitted into cabinetry.

The microwave in my University City apartment sparked. Can I keep using it?

No. Stop using it and unplug it or switch off its breaker. Sparking can come from metal left inside, a burned waveguide cover or damage to the cavity paint. Report it to your landlord, and a technician can find the cause and say whether it is safe to repair.

Why does our apartment microwave only start if we push the door hard?

That usually means a worn door switch or a broken latch hook, which keeps the microwave from detecting that the door is closed. It is a common repair on heavily used units. Do not tape or force the door, since those switches are safety devices.

Smeg Microwaves: What We Check First

Smeg is not a major microwave brand in the US, so it helps to be clear about what we can sensibly repair. The units we see are mostly built-in compact combination ovens that match Smeg wall ovens, combining a microwave with a grill element and sometimes convection. Smeg has also sold countertop microwaves styled like its retro small appliances in some markets, but those are usually not worth an in-home repair visit, and we will tell you that honestly.

Microwaves Used Hard in Apartments Near Campus

In apartments near UNC Charlotte and the light rail stations, the over-the-range microwave may be the most-used appliance in the kitchen. Doors get yanked open mid-cycle and slammed shut, which wears the door switches and latch hooks. Metal containers or foil cause arcing that pits the interior and can burn through the waveguide cover.

Failures to watch for include sparking inside, a burning smell, a unit that runs with no heat, and a dead keypad. Stop using a microwave that sparks. In family homes farther out, over-the-range units more often lose a fan motor or lights after years of steam rising off the cooktop below.

Report the problem to your landlord, and do not try to open the case, since internal parts can hold a dangerous charge. The technician tests the switches, magnetron and controls, replaces a damaged waveguide cover where needed, and explains whether the repair is worth it.
