Drain Lines and Disposals Under Small Sinks

In a compact condo kitchen, the dishwasher's drain hose shares a tight sink cabinet with the disposal, the supply line and whatever is stored there. A hose that sags, kinks or loses its high loop can let dirty water drift back into the tub, and a newly installed disposal with its knockout plug still in place stops draining altogether. Standing water after a cycle, a sour smell and gritty dishes are the usual signs.

Start by cleaning the filter at the bottom of the tub and running the disposal briefly before you start the dishwasher. If water still pools, turn off the breaker or unplug the unit before checking under the sink for a pinched hose. Never pull a panel-ready dishwasher out by its decorative front.
