That usually means air is not moving across the evaporator, either because it is packed with frost from a defrost failure or because the fan has stopped. Both are fixable. A dirty condenser underneath can make it worse.

Can a freezer on a back porch in West Charlotte handle the summer heat?

Many cannot. Standard freezers are built for a limited range of room temperatures, and an unconditioned porch in July can exceed it. Keep the unit shaded with space around it, and if it still struggles, we can check whether the freezer or its location is the real problem.

Those spaces get hot and humid in summer, which forces the compressor to run longer and lets frost build quickly when the lid seal is weak. After a thunderstorm outage, a freezer may take many hours to recover, so give it time before deciding it has failed.

What to Check and Whether to Repair

Put a thermometer inside, check the gasket all the way around and make sure air can move freely around the cabinet. Unplug the freezer before vacuuming any exposed coils.
