The burner cap is likely tilted, or food has clogged some of the burner ports. Turn off the stove, let it cool, clear the ports with a pin and reseat the cap firmly. If the flame stays uneven, the burner head may be damaged.

Stovetop Trouble on Everyday Burners

Freestanding stoves are the default in many homes across these two towns, and the stovetop takes the hardest daily use. On electric models, coil burners loosen in their sockets and arc, glass tops lose a radiant element, and infinite switches fail so a burner runs only on high or not at all. Safe checks are simple. With the stove off and cool, reseat a coil burner firmly and see if it heats, or swap it with a working one of the same size to see whether the fault follows the burner. On gas, clean the cap and ports with a soft brush and let them dry completely. Never adjust gas fittings, and if you smell gas, leave the home and call the gas utility or 911.
