My Viking stove's oven igniter glows but the oven won't light. Why?

That is the classic sign of a weak glow-bar igniter. It glows but doesn't draw enough current to open the gas valve. Replacing the igniter usually fixes it, and we test the valve to be sure.

A coil burner on our Indian Trail stove sparks when it heats. What causes that?

Sparking usually means a loose connection or a burned terminal block underneath the burner. Stop using that burner and turn off the breaker. The socket and burner often need to be replaced together, which is a quick repair.

Our Stallings gas stove lights with a match but not with the igniter. Is it safe to keep using?

Lighting a gas burner by hand is not a habit we recommend, so it is best to get the igniter fixed. Usually a cracked igniter, a wet burner or a failed spark module is to blame. If you ever smell gas, leave and call the gas utility.

Viking Stoves: What We Check First

Most Viking stoves in local kitchens are freestanding all-gas pro ranges in 30, 36 or 48-inch widths, from the older Professional series and the newer 5 Series and 7 Series. On top are heavy sealed burners with spark ignition and cast grates. Below, the oven uses a gas bake burner lit by a hot-surface glow-bar igniter, and many models have a Gourmet-Glo infrared broiler at the top of the oven with its own igniter. Older stoves use a mechanical oven thermostat; newer ones use a sensor and electronic control.

Stovetop Trouble on Everyday Burners

Freestanding stoves are the default in many homes across these two towns, and the stovetop takes the hardest daily use. On electric models, coil burners loosen in their sockets and arc, glass tops lose a radiant element, and infinite switches fail so a burner runs only on high or not at all. Gas stoves tend to show weak or uneven flames from food in the burner ports, or igniters that spark without lighting.

Safe checks are simple. With the stove off and cool, reseat a coil burner firmly and see if it heats, or swap it with a working one of the same size to see whether the fault follows the burner. On gas, clean the cap and ports with a soft brush and let them dry completely. Never adjust gas fittings, and if you smell gas, leave the home and call the gas utility or 911.
