Sharp Microwaves: What We Check First

Sharp makes countertop, over-the-range and built-in microwaves, but the one we are asked about most is the microwave drawer. It sits below a counter or wall oven and opens and closes at the touch of a button, powered by a small motor, gears and slides. Inside, it heats food like any other microwave, with a magnetron, transformer, capacitor, diode and control board. Over-the-range models add a vent fan and lights that serve as a range hood.

Over-the-range units in busy kitchens

In rental kitchens, the over-the-range microwave gets slammed doors, spilled food and heavy daily use. Door switches wear out, and a microwave with a failed switch may blow its main fuse or refuse to start. Food splatter left inside can arc against the waveguide cover and burn a hole in it, which shows up as sparks and a scorched spot on the inside wall.

The safe checks are short. Make sure the door closes and latches cleanly, check the breaker, and clean the interior and grease filters. Do not open the cabinet, because the high-voltage capacitor can hold a dangerous charge even when the unit is unplugged.

A countertop microwave rarely justifies a service visit. Over-the-range and built-in models are different, because replacing one means remounting it and matching the vent setup.
