Valves, filters and frozen fill tubes

Many refrigerators in newer homes here have door dispensers and in-door ice makers, which add more places for ice to bridge and jam. A water filter that is overdue for replacement will slow the fill and shrink the cubes. A fill tube can freeze solid if the valve drips, and the inlet valve itself can fail after years of cycling.

Start with the simple checks: confirm the ice maker's switch or arm is on, replace the water filter if it is past due, and look at the shutoff valve feeding the line. Remove the ice bucket and break up clumps. A freezer that is not cold enough, around zero degrees Fahrenheit, will not make ice reliably no matter how healthy the ice maker is.
