Roper Cooktops: What We Check First
Standalone Roper cooktops are not common, so most surface-burner work on Roper equipment involves the top of a Roper range. Electric Ropers almost always use plug-in coil elements set in drip pans, each controlled by an infinite switch that cycles power on and off. Older built-in cooktops with the Roper badge follow the same design. Because each burner is its own circuit, a failure is usually limited to one position.
- Overheated receptacle losing contact tension behind the drip pan
- Pitted coil element terminals causing intermittent heating
- Infinite switch failure leaving a burner glowing at all settings
- Heat-damaged wiring between switch and receptacle on older units
The full explanation, including what you can safely check yourself and when repair beats replacement, is in our Roper cooktop repair guide.
Renovations and Lakefront Kitchens
When an older Davidson house gets a kitchen update, the cooktop is often set into a counter that was cut for a different model. A cooktop that sits unevenly, wiring crowded beneath it, or a glass top that cracks at a corner can trace back to that fit. Induction units added in renovations also need open airflow under the counter for their cooling fans.
Gas cooktops in larger Cornelius lake homes see heavy use when guests visit. Grease and boil-overs foul the igniters, and a weak spark module can make several burners click at once without lighting any of them. Large pots on oversized grates can also scorch knobs and switches mounted close to the burners.
Safe First Steps and the Visit
Turn off the breaker before cleaning an electric or induction top, and stop using one with a crack. On gas units, dry burner bases and seat the caps evenly; never adjust valves or lines. If you notice a gas smell, leave and call the gas utility or 911. We test switches, igniters, elements and boards and quote before repair.
