Why does my Everest freezer door stick shut and then tear the gasket?

Freezers use a small heater in the door frame to stop the gasket from freezing to the cabinet. If that heater fails, the gasket bonds to the frame and tears when the door is yanked open. Replacing the gasket without fixing the heater only leads to another tear.

Check the owner's manual for its rated temperature range, since many freezers are not built for a hot garage. Keep it out of direct sun with space around it. If it still struggles in a moderate room, a fan, defrost or start component may be failing, and we can test it.

Everest Freezers: What We Check First

An Everest reach-in freezer has to manage something a cooler barely deals with: ice on the evaporator coil. Every door opening brings in humid kitchen air, the moisture freezes onto the fins, and several times a day the freezer pauses cooling, energizes a defrost heater to clear the coil, and sends the water down a heated drain. A termination control ends the heat once the coil is clean.

Second Freezers in Hot Utility Spaces

A chest or upright freezer is common in ranch homes here, usually placed in a carport storage room, utility room or garage because the kitchen has no space. Those spaces are not cooled, and in the hottest weeks of summer, many freezers run nonstop or slowly lose temperature because they are built for a limited range of surrounding heat. A freezer that thaws only in August may be in the wrong room rather than broken. Upright frost-free freezers also fail through defrost heaters and fans, while chest freezers more often lose their seal or need manual defrosting.

First Checks and an Honest Repair Call

Put a thermometer inside, check the lid or door gasket for gaps and make sure the freezer has space around it to release heat. Unplug it before vacuuming any coils you can reach.
