On gas surfaces, boil-overs clog burner ports and soak the igniter, causing constant clicking or uneven flames. On electric coil tops, elements and their receptacles burn out from heavy use, and the infinite switch behind each knob can fail so a burner only runs on high. Smooth glass tops can crack from heavy cookware or sliding pots. Before any check, turn off the breaker, and never work on the gas supply. If you smell gas, leave the house and call the gas utility or 911.

Cleaning First, Then Testing

Remove gas burner caps, clean the ports with a soft brush and let everything dry fully before reseating the caps evenly. On a coil top, swap a dead element into a working position to see whether the element or the switch is at fault.
