When the turntable stops, the light dies or the unit runs without heating, the cause is often a door switch, a diode, a magnetron or the control board. Storm-related surges can also leave the display blank.

Microwaves hold dangerous voltage in the capacitor even after unplugging, so never open the cabinet. You can safely flip the breaker off and back on, clean the metal grease filters underneath, and note whether the fault is constant or intermittent. A unit that works only some of the time often points to a door switch.
