Sparks often come from a burned or greasy waveguide cover on the cavity wall, chipped interior paint, or metal left inside. Stop using it until the cause is found. Replacing the cover is an inexpensive repair if the magnetron has not been damaged.

Roper Microwaves: What We Check First

Roper has never been a big name in microwaves, and you will not find many Roper-badged units in local kitchens. When one does turn up, it is a Whirlpool-sourced countertop or over-the-range model with the same basic layout as other budget microwaves: a magnetron, a high-voltage transformer, capacitor and diode, a set of door interlock switches, a turntable motor and, on over-the-range units, a vent fan and light. Many Roper kitchens actually have a microwave from a different brand, and we repair those too.

Over-the-Range Units and Drawer Models

An over-the-range microwave does double duty as the cooktop's vent hood, so its fan, filters and lights take daily heat and grease. When the turntable stops, the light dies or the unit runs without heating, the cause is often a door switch, a diode, a magnetron or the control board. Storm-related surges can also leave the display blank.

Microwaves hold dangerous voltage in the capacitor even after unplugging, so never open the cabinet. You can safely flip the breaker off and back on, clean the metal grease filters underneath, and note whether the fault is constant or intermittent. A unit that works only some of the time often points to a door switch.

Drawer microwaves in custom kitchens are serviced in place where possible, without pulling the cabinetry apart.
