Is it worth repairing a Smeg countertop microwave?

Usually not with an in-home visit. A countertop microwave costs relatively little to replace, and the diagnosis alone can be a large part of its value. We are glad to advise, but our repair work makes more sense on built-in Smeg combination ovens that are fitted into cabinetry.

My microwave in a NoDa cottage keeps tripping the breaker. Is it broken?

Not necessarily. Older kitchens often put several appliances on one circuit, and running the microwave with a toaster or kettle can overload it. If it trips on its own, a door switch or internal fault may be the cause, and we can test it.

Smeg is not a major microwave brand in the US, so it helps to be clear about what we can sensibly repair. The units we see are mostly built-in compact combination ovens that match Smeg wall ovens, combining a microwave with a grill element and sometimes convection. Smeg has also sold countertop microwaves styled like its retro small appliances in some markets, but those are usually not worth an in-home repair visit, and we will tell you that honestly.

Microwaves in Small Kitchens

With limited counter space in mill cottages and bungalows, an over-the-range microwave is a natural choice. It handles venting for the stove as well, so its fan, lights and filters wear from heat and grease. Grease filters that are never cleaned make the fan noisy and weak. Door switches fail with heavy use and can stop the unit from starting.

Renovations sometimes put a microwave on a shared kitchen circuit along with other appliances, and running several at once can trip a breaker. In that case, the microwave is not the problem; the circuit is. We will tell you when a dedicated outlet would solve it, since that work belongs to an electrician.

In newer townhomes, built-in microwaves with trim kits are more common, and storm surges can affect their controls.
