Thermador Dishwashers: What We Check First

They use a cylindrical filter in the base, a drain pump below a small cover, a circulation pump with an integrated flow-through heater, and a leak protection system with a float switch in the base pan. Many models offer StarDry, which uses a mineral called zeolite to help dry dishes, and third-rack cutlery storage.

Retrofitted Dishwashers in Older Kitchens

Mill cottages and early bungalows were built long before dishwashers, so the one in your kitchen was added later, often in a tight spot with a long drain hose running to an old sink. A hose that kinks, sags without a high loop or connects to a clogged trap can leave standing water and smells. Some installations lack a proper anchor bracket, letting the dishwasher tip forward when the door opens.

Clean the filter in the tub bottom, run the disposal before starting, and check under the sink with the power off. A leak may drip into the crawl space unseen, so watch for soft flooring near the toe-kick or a damp smell from the vents below the house.
