My Viking stove's oven igniter glows but the oven won't light. Why?

That is the classic sign of a weak glow-bar igniter. It glows but doesn't draw enough current to open the gas valve. Replacing the igniter usually fixes it, and we test the valve to be sure.

My stove in a NoDa mill cottage sits on a sloped floor. Can you level it?

Viking Stoves: What We Check First

Most Viking stoves in local kitchens are freestanding all-gas pro ranges in 30, 36 or 48-inch widths, from the older Professional series and the newer 5 Series and 7 Series. On top are heavy sealed burners with spark ignition and cast grates. Below, the oven uses a gas bake burner lit by a hot-surface glow-bar igniter, and many models have a Gourmet-Glo infrared broiler at the top of the oven with its own igniter. Older stoves use a mechanical oven thermostat; newer ones use a sensor and electronic control.

Freestanding Stoves in Older Homes

A freestanding stove is what many NoDa cottages and Plaza Midwood bungalows cook on, fueled either by gas or by electricity through coil burners. Coil burners that heat only when wiggled point to a burned receptacle, while one that stays on high may have a failed switch. Gas stoves bring igniter and burner issues, plus oven thermostats that drift with age.

Older homes sometimes lack the anti-tip bracket that keeps a stove from tipping forward, and some sit on uneven floors that make pans slide. The technician can level the stove and install a bracket during the visit if one is available for the model.

With the power off, check that coil burners are seated. Smelling gas means it is time to leave and call the gas utility or 911 from outside. The technician tests burners, switches, igniters and the oven, and gives you the diagnosis and price first. If parts for an older stove are no longer made, you hear that before any work.
