Is it worth repairing a Smeg countertop microwave?

Usually not with an in-home visit. A countertop microwave costs relatively little to replace, and the diagnosis alone can be a large part of its value. We are glad to advise, but our repair work makes more sense on built-in Smeg combination ovens that are fitted into cabinetry.

The fan on my Uptown condo's over-the-range microwave runs but barely pulls smoke. Is it broken?

Not necessarily. Many condo units recirculate air through a charcoal filter, and a saturated filter or greasy mesh filters cut airflow sharply. If fresh filters do not help, the fan motor or its control may be failing, and we can test both.

Do you repair built-in microwaves set into Uptown cabinetry?

Yes. Built-in and trim-kit microwaves can usually be slid out of their opening once the trim is removed. The technician protects the surrounding cabinets and explains whether the fault is worth repairing on that model before going ahead.

Smeg is not a major microwave brand in the US, so it helps to be clear about what we can sensibly repair. The units we see are mostly built-in compact combination ovens that match Smeg wall ovens, combining a microwave with a grill element and sometimes convection. Smeg has also sold countertop microwaves styled like its retro small appliances in some markets, but those are usually not worth an in-home repair visit, and we will tell you that honestly.

When the Microwave Is Also the Range Hood

Compact kitchens in Uptown buildings frequently rely on an over-the-range microwave to handle both reheating and stovetop ventilation, often recirculating air through a charcoal filter rather than ducting it outside. That double duty exposes the unit to steady heat and grease from the burners below. Fan motors, cooktop lights, grease filters and the control panel take the brunt of it, and door switches wear from daily use.

Clean or replace the metal grease filters, and the charcoal filter if your model has one; a clogged filter makes the fan loud and weak. Do not open the cabinet. A microwave stores high voltage in its capacitor even when unplugged, so internal testing belongs to a technician.

Our technician checks whether the problem is a simple door switch or fuse, or a larger part such as the magnetron or control board. Over-the-range units are heavy and mounted to the wall and upper cabinet, so we handle removal when it is needed. If a repair would cost close to a new unit, you hear that before any work.
