Why is my Scotsman Nugget ice coming out wet and mushy?

Wet Nugget ice can come from low refrigeration performance, a dirty condenser, heavy scale in the cylinder or an overfilled water reservoir. Warm surroundings can also play a part. We check each to find the cause.

The ice maker in my West Charlotte rental fridge stopped after the unit was moved. Why?

Moving the refrigerator often kinks or pinches the thin supply line behind it, or the valve was turned off and never reopened. Check both with the fridge unplugged. If the water supply is fine, the inlet valve or ice maker may need testing on a visit booked by the owner.

My side-by-side dispenser hums but no ice comes out. What causes that?

Usually ice has melted and refrozen into a solid block that jams the auger, often after the door was left ajar or the power flickered. Empty the bucket and let it thaw. If it jams again soon, a door seal, fan or temperature issue is likely the cause.

Scotsman Ice Makers: What We Check First

Scotsman ice machines we see in the Charlotte area fall into three groups, and each is built differently. Prodigy cube machines freeze water on an evaporator and use hot gas to harvest. Nugget and flake machines freeze water inside a refrigerated cylinder, with a gear-driven auger pushing ice up and out through a head. Gourmet undercounter cubers spray water upward into cups to form clear, top-hat-shaped cubes. The first thing we do is identify which one you have.

Water Lines, Add-On Kits and Freezer Temperature

Many older top-freezer refrigerators in west-side homes had an ice maker kit added later, fed by a thin copper or plastic line through the back of the cabinet. That line can kink when the fridge is pushed back after cleaning, and old saddle valves on the supply pipe sometimes clog or start to drip. A freezer running too warm also stops ice production well before food starts to thaw. Side-by-side models in rentals and duplexes add a dispenser, where a frozen fill tube or a jammed auger often ends ice delivery.

Checks You Can Make Before We Arrive

Make sure the supply valve is open and the ice maker's arm or switch is in the on position, and replace the water filter if it is overdue. Unplug the fridge before breaking up fused cubes in the bucket. If ice still does not form, our technician tests the inlet valve, the ice maker module and the freezer temperature, then explains the cost before any repair.
