LG Dryers: What We Check First
LG dryers are not direct-drive like LG washers. They use a conventional belt around the drum, driven by a motor that also powers the blower, with rear rollers and a front bearing or slides supporting the drum. Electric units heat with an element; gas models use an igniter, flame sensor and valve coils. Many LG dryers add a moisture sensor, steam features and a heat pump on some newer models, plus Flow Sense, which watches the exhaust and warns when airflow is restricted.
- Exhaust restriction triggering d80 to d95 flow sense warnings
- Thermistor open or shorted, shown as tE1 or tE2 errors
- Heating element or thermal fuse failure, dryer tumbling cold
- Worn idler pulley, rollers or snapped belt on the drum drive
The full explanation, including what you can safely check yourself and when repair beats replacement, is in our LG dryer repair guide.
Long Duct Runs in Two-Story Homes
When the laundry room is upstairs or in the middle of the house, the dryer duct usually travels a fair distance before it reaches daylight. Lint settles in those bends, and spring pollen plus summer humidity make the exhaust work even harder. The result looks like a heating failure: loads that need two cycles, a cabinet that feels hot, or a dryer that shuts itself off partway through.
Start with the lint screen, then step outside and watch the vent hood while the dryer runs. If the flap barely moves, the duct needs cleaning. For a gas dryer that is cold, never work on the gas connection yourself, and if you smell gas, leave the house and call the gas utility or 911.
If airflow is good and the drum still turns without heat, the technician tests the thermal fuse, heating element or igniter, thermostats and control. Squeals and thumps usually mean a worn belt, idler pulley or drum rollers. You hear the diagnosis and price before work begins.
