Why are there sparks inside my Roper microwave?

Sparks often come from a burned or greasy waveguide cover on the cavity wall, chipped interior paint, or metal left inside. Stop using it until the cause is found. Replacing the cover is an inexpensive repair if the magnetron has not been damaged.

Our over-the-range microwave in Indian Trail stopped heating but the light still works. Is it worth fixing?

Roper Microwaves: What We Check First

Roper has never been a big name in microwaves, and you will not find many Roper-badged units in local kitchens. When one does turn up, it is a Whirlpool-sourced countertop or over-the-range model with the same basic layout as other budget microwaves: a magnetron, a high-voltage transformer, capacitor and diode, a set of door interlock switches, a turntable motor and, on over-the-range units, a vent fan and light. Many Roper kitchens actually have a microwave from a different brand, and we repair those too.

Over-the-Range Units Do Two Jobs

Most kitchens in these subdivisions have an over-the-range microwave with a built-in fan and light for the cooktop below. Because it sits in rising heat and grease, its weak spots are predictable: grease-clogged filters, a vent fan that hums or rattles, burned-out cooktop lights, door switches that wear from daily use, and turntables that stall. A unit that runs but leaves food cold has a fault in its high-voltage section.

That high-voltage section is the reason to be careful. Microwaves store a dangerous charge in the capacitor even when unplugged, so do not remove the cabinet. Owners can safely wash or replace the grease filters, check the breaker, and reset power once after a summer storm blanks the display.
