Water is circulated over a chilled evaporator, and ice builds layer by layer before a harvest cycle releases it into the insulated bin. Melt water and rinse water must leave the unit, either by gravity to a floor drain or through a drain pump when there is no drain below. An ice maker is often the first appliance to complain about well water. Sediment and iron load the refrigerator filter faster than its rated life, and a clogged filter or valve screen makes thin, hollow or misshapen cubes. Minerals can also build up where the fill tube enters the freezer, letting it freeze shut and stopping production entirely.
