Why does the top of my Roper agitator spin freely?

On older direct-drive Roper washers, the agitator dogs inside the top section wear out and stop gripping. The bottom of the agitator still moves, but the top freewheels and clothes do not roll over properly. Replacing the dogs is a quick, inexpensive repair.

Our washer near Marshville fills slower every month. Is it the well?

It often is. Sediment from a well collects in the inlet screens and the water valve, gradually choking the flow. A whole-house sediment filter helps. If cleaning the screens does not restore normal filling, the inlet valve may need replacing.

Roper Washers: What We Check First

There are two generations of Roper top-loaders in local homes. Older machines use Whirlpool's direct-drive design, where a reversible motor connects to the transmission through a plastic-and-rubber coupler and the pump bolts to the motor. Newer Roper washers use a low-profile Whirlpool platform with a belt-driven gearcase, an electronic shift mechanism and a lid that locks during spin. Knowing which one you have narrows the diagnosis immediately.

Three Settings, Three Kinds of Washer Trouble

Out toward Marshville, private wells deliver sediment and iron along with the water. The fine screens where the hoses connect to the washer trap that grit, so fills get slower, and some machines eventually show a fill error. Iron can also leave orange staining on light clothes. Turning off both valves, unplugging the washer and checking those screens is a reasonable first step.
