That is the classic sign of a weak glow-bar igniter. It glows but doesn't draw enough current to open the gas valve. Replacing the igniter usually fixes it, and we test the valve to be sure.

A burner on the stove in our Wingate rental only works on high. What failed?

That is a classic sign of a failed infinite switch, the control behind the knob that cycles the burner on and off. It is a fairly simple repair. We confirm the switch is the cause before replacing it.

Viking Stoves: What We Check First

Most Viking stoves in local kitchens are freestanding all-gas pro ranges in 30, 36 or 48-inch widths, from the older Professional series and the newer 5 Series and 7 Series. On top are heavy sealed burners with spark ignition and cast grates. Below, the oven uses a gas bake burner lit by a hot-surface glow-bar igniter, and many models have a Gourmet-Glo infrared broiler at the top of the oven with its own igniter. Older stoves use a mechanical oven thermostat; newer ones use a sensor and electronic control.

Coil Burners, Propane Flames and Rental Stoves

Electric coil stoves remain common in older Monroe homes and Wingate rentals. Their usual faults are a burner that heats only on high, a socket that has burned from a loose connection, or an infinite switch that has failed. With the stove off and cool, swapping the dead coil with a working burner of the same size quickly shows whether the coil or the socket is at fault.

In rural parts around Marshville and Wingate, some homes cook on propane. Propane stoves fail much like natural gas ones, with clicking igniters, burners that will not light and uneven flames from food in the ports. Clean and dry the burner heads with the stove off.
