A coil that frosts solid almost always means the defrost cycle is not completing. A heater, a probe, a drain issue or a controller setting can cause it. A manual defrost restores cooling for a while, but the fault will return until the defrost part is repaired.

On a schedule set in the digital controller, the compressor stops, a heater warms the coil, the meltwater drains out, and an evaporator probe tells the controller when the coil is clear.

Columns, Drawers and Garage Chests

Freezers here come in more shapes than usual. Built-in kitchens may have an all-freezer column beside a matching refrigerator, or undercounter freezer drawers in an island or bar. Garages and workshop buildings on larger lots often hold an upright or chest freezer for bulk food. If the freezer is warming, keep the door shut and move the most valuable food to another freezer if you have one. With the power off, check that the door or lid gasket is clean and sealing, and clear dust from the grille or coils. A freezer column with heavy frost on the back panel usually has a defrost problem, not a sealed-system failure.
