KitchenAid sells very few standalone freezers, so nearly all the KitchenAid freezer work we do involves the freezer section of a refrigerator. That means the pull-out drawer on French-door and bottom-mount models, the full-height freezer side of side-by-sides, and the freezer compartment on built-in units. All of these are frost-free, using a defrost heater, a sensor and a fan to keep the evaporator clear.

Columns, Drawers and Garage Chests

Freezers here come in more shapes than usual. Built-in kitchens may have an all-freezer column beside a matching refrigerator, or undercounter freezer drawers in an island or bar. Garages and workshop buildings on larger lots often hold an upright or chest freezer for bulk food. Each fails differently: columns and drawers tend toward fan, sensor and defrost faults, while garage units fight summer heat and dust.

If the freezer is warming, keep the door shut and move the most valuable food to another freezer if you have one. With the power off, check that the door or lid gasket is clean and sealing, and clear dust from the grille or coils. A freezer column with heavy frost on the back panel usually has a defrost problem, not a sealed-system failure.

The technician tests the defrost heater and controls, fans, sensors, start components and compressor operation. We never open a sealed system without explaining what that involves and its cost. You will know what failed and what the fix costs before we start. Long driveways and outbuildings are no problem; just tell us where the unit lives.
