Delayed ignition with a puff usually means the igniter is weakening and the valve is opening late. It is a known wear pattern and should be repaired soon, because delayed ignition can startle and is hard on the oven. Replacing the igniter is the typical fix.

Gas ovens use a hot-surface glow-bar igniter wired in series with the safety valve, so the valve opens only when the igniter draws enough current. Electric ovens use separate bake and broil elements controlled by a temperature sensor and either a mechanical thermostat on older models or an electronic control on newer ones. Double Wall Ovens and Combination Units
