Grinding often means bearing wear or heavy scale inside the freezing cylinder. Running it that way can damage the auger, the cylinder and the gear motor. Shut it off and schedule a check soon.

Hoshizaki Ice Makers: What We Check First

A Hoshizaki crescent-cube machine works differently from most competitors. Instead of a flat grid of cells, ice forms on vertical stainless evaporator plates as water cascades over them. When the evaporator thermistor reaches the harvest point, hot gas warms the plates and fresh water flows behind them to release the crescents into the bin. A float switch controls refilling. Cubelet and flake models use an auger turning inside a refrigerated cylinder instead.

Supply lines, filters and older plumbing

The water line to the refrigerator in an older Rock Hill home may have been added years after the kitchen was built, often as thin tubing run through a wall or floor. Those lines kink, crack or get pinched when the refrigerator is moved. A partly closed or corroded valve on that line will starve the ice maker and leave you with small, hollow or no cubes.

Newer refrigerators with filters need them changed on schedule, because a clogged filter restricts flow to both the dispenser and the ice maker. If you have recently moved the refrigerator, check the line behind it. If the ice maker is getting water but not ejecting cubes, the module or its motor may have failed.
