Kenmore Oven / Ranges: What We Check First

Most Kenmore ovens are part of a freestanding or slide-in range, and many were built by Frigidaire with a 790 model prefix. Kenmore also sold wall ovens and some ranges built by other manufacturers. Gas ovens use a hot-surface bake igniter to open the gas valve, electric ovens use bake and broil elements, and newer models add convection and electronic controls. Older Kenmore ranges often used a mechanical thermostat and clock, while newer ones moved to electronic control boards with touch panels.

  • Frigidaire-built gas bake igniter too weak to open the valve
  • Bake or broil element burned out on electric models
  • Oven temperature sensor drifting and causing uneven baking
  • Discontinued control boards limiting repairs on older units

The full explanation, including what you can safely check yourself and when repair beats replacement, is in our Kenmore oven / range repair guide.

Older ovens worth keeping

Ovens in many of Rock Hill's older homes are simple machines: a bake element, a broil element, a thermostat or basic control, and a door that seals with a gasket. When one stops heating, the fix is often a single element or igniter, and the rest of the oven may have years left. A burned element usually shows a visible blister or break once the oven has cooled.

Gas ovens that take a long time to light, or that light and then go out, typically have a weak hot-surface igniter. The igniter glows but no longer draws enough current to open the gas valve. That is a common repair, but never try to bypass the igniter or the valve yourself.

Newer controls and the repair visit

Electronic controls on newer ovens can be upset by power surges from summer storms. Switching the breaker off for a few minutes may clear a frozen display. If the oven still misbehaves, the technician tests the temperature sensor, elements, relays and control, then explains the fault and the price before starting.
